Franchises come in all shapes and sizes - in fact, it's often said you can franchise just about any product or service. The main categories are Corporate, Retail, and Service franchises.

  • Corporate Franchises
refers to franchise systems that form one component of an overall business, where other components are not franchised. For example, earth-moving equipment specialists Komatsu and white goods specialists Fisher and Paykel have franchised their repairs/service divisions.
  • Retail Franchises
as the name suggests, are generally shop-based and divided into two sub-categories, 'food' and 'other'. 'Other' covers a huge range of products and services ranging from books to bedding to building products.
  • Service Franchises
can be mobile, home-based or premises-based, depending on the service provided. Services like domestic or commercial cleaning, gardening or pool care tend to be mobile; office services (like book-keeping) or services like tutoring tend to be home or premise-based. Other services, such as mortgage-broking use any (or all) of these approaches.

Franchise Developments has assisted franchisors to build businesses in each of these categories, as illustrated in the following case studies.
